Characteristics of Rubber Playground Tiles

The tiles consist of recycled SBR rubber granules bonded with UV-stabilised polyurethane. Their textured and water-permeable construction creates a practical surface for outdoor play areas.

Both sizes have the same thickness, material and impact-absorbing properties. Your choice mainly depends on the size and layout of the play area.

The divided surface of the 1 × 1m rubber tile creates the appearance of four 50 × 50cm sections. This helps both sizes produce a consistent finished floor.

Installing the Playground Tiles

Install the tiles on a firm, level and properly prepared base. Suitable surfaces include concrete, paving, asphalt and well-compacted ground.

The weight of the tiles allows them to be laid loose in many applications. Adhesive and fixing pins are not required for standard 25mm tiles. However, you can bond the tiles or add perimeter edging when the location or expected use makes this preferable.

You can also cut the tiles to fit around playground equipment, posts, edges and other obstacles. Measure the area carefully before cutting.

Drainage and Maintenance

The open rubber structure allows rainwater to pass through the tiles. The base below the tiles must still provide adequate drainage. This prevents water from collecting underneath the playground flooring.

Remove leaves, sand, and other loose dirt regularly. Clean the surface with water and a mild detergent when needed. Avoid harsh chemicals that could affect the rubber or polyurethane binder.

Playground Tiles or Standard Outdoor Tiles?

Standard outdoor tiles mainly provide grip, drainage and a comfortable walking surface. Playground tiles also absorb impact and have a tested critical fall height.

The 25mm tiles have a tested critical fall height of 0.8 metres. The supplied technical information lists testing in accordance with EN 1177:2008, ASTM F1292, and BS 7188.

Q2. How many tiles do I need per square metre?

You need four 50 × 50cm tiles or one 100 × 100cm tile to cover one square metre. Allow extra material when the area includes corners, posts or sections that require cutting.

Q3. Do the tiles need to be glued down?

No. You can lay the tiles loose on a stable and level surface. However, adhesive can provide extra stability in demanding or heavily used locations.

Q4. Which surfaces can I install the tiles on?

Suitable bases include concrete, paving, asphalt and well-compacted ground. The base must be flat, stable and able to drain water correctly.

Q5. Do I need fixing pins or perimeter edging?

Q8. Are rubber mats for playgrounds the same as playground tiles?

The terms are sometimes used for similar products. These products are individual rubber tiles that join together to create a continuous playground surface. Their modular format also makes individual sections easier to replace.

Choose 50 × 50cm tiles for smaller areas, detailed layouts or easier handling. The 100 × 100cm tiles cover larger areas with fewer individual tiles and joints. Both sizes offer the same 25mm thickness and 0.8m critical fall height.
